A Medical Transcriptionist listens to dictated voice files (dictated by a health professional or physician) and turns those voice files into a written report. The written report, which is then authorised by the health professional or physician, will contain a variety of patient information, such as their symptoms, treatments, health conditions and other relevant information.

Training

To start a career as a Medical Transcriptionist, a person must receive training from a registered Medical Transcription program. This training can be provided through distance education, community colleges or vocational schools.
Many companies prefer to hire Medical Transcriptionists with some years of experience. However, some companies are willing to work with new graduates seeking entry-level positions. The majority of employers prefer that their Medical Transcriptionists hold an associate’s degree or complete a one-year diploma program.

What to expect

Voice files are dictated by health professionals or physicians and these are transmitted through digital, analog, or internet methods. The Medical Transcriptionist wears a headset to listen to the doctor’s voice files and must be a fast typist and be computer literate.
Medical Transcriptionists can often transcribe for potentially hours at a time. Hence, the ability to concentrate for prolonged periods is also imperative for a potential candidate.

Required Skills

A good transcriptionist is fast and accurate. Accuracy when transcribing a medical report is imperative as this information is sent to a patient’s medical file. If the entered information contains errors, both the health of the patient and reputation of the health professional, can be adversely affected. Medical Transcription is a field suited to people who are detail-oriented.
Medical Transcriptionists must also be committed to maintaining confidentiality as they deal daily with sensitive personal information. They also need to feel comfortable using technology because they use different types of equipment to carry out their work.
If someone is pursuing a Medical Transcription career, he or she must also have some knowledge of medical terminology. For example, Medical Transcriptionists must be able to accurately transcribe information about human anatomy, medical treatment, medical procedures, and pharmacology. Schools that teach Medical Transcription may also require students to complete lessons in English grammar.

Where you may work

Someone who chooses a career as a Medical Transcriptionist can expect to work in a variety of settings. Many Medical Transcriptionists work from home. Other transcriptionists may work in hospitals, doctors’ offices, medical clinics, transcription service offices, or other health care facilities.
